Well, finally joined the ranks of Arteon owners in early July, after having gone through placing an order and having the order canceled. I had wanted a specific color only, Kurkuma Yellow as it's called in the US, and none was available on the ground nor was any expected at my local dealer with my exact package (SEL Premium R-Line with 20" wheels). So I entered an order for a 2020 model fitting those exact specs in late May.

At the end of June, I was informed my order was being canceled by VW, due to 'SEL Premium R-line Kurkuma Yellow unavailable in US for 2020 model year'. Best guess from my local dealer was that Kurkuma Yellow wasn't going to be available in 2020 in the U.S., or at least for my trim. So next step was to try searching, but no 20" rims were available in the US in 2019...so I had to remove that requirement and try to locate an SEL Premium R-Line with 19" wheels in Kurkuma yellow. Searches turned up 4 in the US...One in North Carolina, one in Ohio, one in Massachusetts, and one in Arizona. None of those places are close to south Florida!

After some wheeling and dealing and negotiation, my local dealer was willing to procure the car from the dealer in Arizona, sending a transport to pick it up and drive it 2,340 miles across the country. On July 10th, the car arrived and was prepped, and I went to the dealer to make final negotiations. This is my 5th VW vehicle - I started with a 2000 Passat sedan, then the 2003 Passat W8 wagon, a 2007 Passat Wagon Executive 4-motion, and a 2013 CC Executive 4Motion. My most recent vehicle was a 2015 Audi Allroad Premium Plus, which I was trading in for the Arteon. I drove it home that afternoon.

It's been great so far - the first week involved lots of programming - driver settings and customs, radio presets, setting up the DCC and preferred damping settings, etc. Windows tinted - a must here in Florida...no options I really need to add since the SEL Premium R comes with everything available...though the dealer threw in the rubber mat kit, CarGo organizer in the trunk, and Bumperdillo guard. I absolutely love the color. I've had many many black and silver cars over the years, and just get tired seeing acres and acres of silver, black, grey, and white cars - which make up probably 90% of all vehicles on American roads. Unlike Europeans, we don't get as many diverse colors offered, nor do most of our cars come with custom color ordering ability.

Here are a few pics of my lovely ride:

I've yet to see another Arteon on the road here...and apparently neither has anyone else, based on the number of times I'm asked about the car, the looks it gets on the road, and when parked - the color certainly gathers attention and since it's an unfamiliar model, most seem to walk around the back to try to figure out what it is!

So far, my average on 3 tanks of gas has been 25.7MPG. That's mostly commuting, 5 days a week, 20 miles each way...of that, about 7 miles is highway and the rest is in-town and stoplights, during normal rush-hour commute times...plus whatever weekend play and cruising mixed in. I haven't been too disappointed - my Allroad was averaging right around 27mpg with the same commute...same 2.0 engine, but in 220HP tune...so I've only lost a little over a mile a gallon, and the engine definitely has more power and pep off the line.

The tank on the Arteon is larger than the Allroad, which actually gives me a little more left in the tank on my Friday fillup (I fill up each Friday on the way home from work at the same station). I haven't yet done a long highway drive to see what the max mileage is - I have a trip planned in mid-September which will be 500 miles or so, all highway, so that will give me the first peek at how it does in those situations.

It would certainly be nice to see something like that. There were rumors of an Arteon R version, back when the car first came out in Europe - but I don't know whether sales would be enough to justify an even hotter version for more money - certainly the U.S. sales were never going to be anything more than niche, so it would be more about how it's selling in Europe and China, and if meeting VW's targets. A hybrid with the gas & electric stacked for performance, but also able to deliver higher mileage, might be a good approach for an R type car...if they decided to go with one.
